Reviving the blog

The last time this blog got any attention was over a year ago … and how time has flown. What was once a busy blog site has become one of those abandoned, archived, lonely corners of the great web. I’ve been working harder at another, niche blog – Greenroom – and using Tumblr and Posterous

… of drought and flooding rains (Part 3)

This is something of a coda to my earlier couple of posts with the same title. Last night I read My Country during the Road to Recovery concert held in a paddock at the tiny township of Murphy’s Creek, outside Toowoomba. This was one of the settlements devastated during the flood on January 10, 2011.

… of drought and flooding rains (Part 2)

An article I wrote about the flood disaster here in southern Queensland was published in today’s Melbourne Sun Herald newspaper and online. The published version was edited, as it needed to be. Thanks to my Editor (doesn’t that sound grand?) for making it a much tighter piece.  I thought I’d post the full version here

Voting in Brisbane, 1937

Ah, yes … some things never change, though I see this ‘Ordinary Voting Officer’ is using a fountain pen. Voting in Brisbane, 1937 Originally uploaded by State Library of Queensland, Australia

Twitter: to follow or not to follow? That is the question.

Like many who use social networking software to engage in conversation, I’d characterise myself as a heavy Twitter-user.  And the more I use Twitter, the more followers I get; it’s the nature of viral communication.  I’m now followed by 1400 + people – small beans compared with some.  Now, I follow some who don’t follow

10 Years on … how technology has changed my world

Yesterday the new solar panels on my roof started generating energy for the first time, joining the smaller hot-water solar system I’ve been using for a couple of years now.  I was fascinated to see the wheel on the old meter spinning backwards for the first time; the energy company will put in a new
