Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A wonderfully, fast-paced horror read. Joe Hill’s literary voice has echoes of his father’s – Stephen King – especially in the creation of singular characters and a seemingly ordinary world threaded through, or is that ‘invaded by’ the unthinkable and horribly persistent ‘other’ world of phantasms. The broken-down rockstar and anti-hero Judas Coyne is utterly unlikeable – although he had me onside when I saw how good he was to his dogs. By novel’s end you are rooting for his team. This first novel bids for ‘unputdownable’ status.
